Bad examples and beautiful gestures
03 July 2024
The Tour de France that has just left Florence offers images similar to those seen at the Giro d'Italia a month ago. The unsightly gestures of many athletes who throw on the side of the road anything that no longer serves are still evident.
We who process plastic and produce jars, bottles and among these also water bottles would like there was attention to the environment and balance in evaluating the use of a very useful material and among the most recyclable. Ok, now the UCI, the International Cycling Union, has decided to punish heavily, who throws anything out of the green areas set up during the big stage races.
It’s true that fans, especially kids, can’t wait to pick up the water bottles thrown by their idols. It is true that the most stupid environmentalism tends to criminalize everything, especially plastic, forgetting the indispensable technical qualities and the great recyclability.
The question is that seeing athletes applauded by everyone throwing whatever along the streets of their races is not a nice sight. Imagine how many Sunday cyclists thinking of imitating their champions will throw the remains of their snacks towards deserted bushes.
While we are happy that the UCI set itself the goal of ferrying cycling towards the third millennium it is nice to remember the images of "Pogačar" at the Giro while slowing down and giving his bottle to a little boy who chases him leaving it in his hands.
